Greater Manchester Marathon

Sunday 8th April to Monday 16th April 2018

Just after 9:15am on Sunday 8th April, Claire followed 15000 runners across the start line of the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon. For those 15000 runners the aim was to complete within a few hours but for Claire the aim was to beat 17 days!.

The first day was a tough one for Claire as there were two busy roads on the course that didn't have footpaths so it was vital that Claire walked these whilst the roads were closed. This meant walking the first 2 miles of the course and then driving to mile 19.7 and walking another 2.3 miles.

The first day saw Claire walk 4.3 miles but it wasn't a pace she could continue with as the pounding through her arms, shoulders, neck and hands is relentless and there is always an issue of rubbing that Claire cannot feel so regular stops and checks are vital for her health.

The generosity and support from the people of Manchester was truly amazing and this always kept Claire going through the hard times. It was also a boost when Clare Balding arrived with Kate & Helen Richardson-Walsh to walk with Claire.

The pavements were proving tricky as any cambers, slopes and uneven surfaces are difficult for Claire to negotiate but she persevered as always.

The days were long and tiring but Claire was managing to complete 3 miles per day and as we approached the weekend it was looking good for a Monday afternoon finish. Despite the warnings prior to the walk of the 'Manchester rain' we were very lucky and whilst it was a little chilly at times, we only had a couple of showers.

Monday morning arrived and Claire was now only 2.5 miles from completing this amazing challenge and her target of 3pm looked possible and the welcome she received was truly incredible. Approaching the finishing line at Trafford Town Hall the crowds were cheering and clapping and it made it such an emotional ending to what was another incredible achievement.

SO FAR CLAIRE HAS RAISED OVER £37K FROM THIS CHALLENGE BUT IT IS STILL POSSIBLE TO SUPPORT CLAIRE AND THE NICHOLLS SPINAL INJURY FOUNDATION USING THE LINKS BELOW.

As usual, Claire attempted this amazing challenge to raise awareness of spinal injuries and more vital funds for the Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation.

On Sunday 8th April 2018 1000's of runners will set off on the 26.2 miles of the ASICS Greater Manchester marathon course all with the aim of finishing within a few hours - but one determined competitor will be out there for a few days!

Claire is attempting her second marathon. London 2012 took her 17 days. With her 'never give up' attitude, Claire will be fitter and stronger than ever and will be out on the route for long days and is ready to smash her record!.

Claire is part of the 'Don't stop me now' team selected by Vassos Alexander (BBC Radio 2 and Sports Commentator) but unfortunately he will soon leave Claire behind!!

Many thanks to our valued sponsors and supporters
